For years, Doña Lidia, known affectionately as “Mam,” was the heart of her household. Her hands shaped every meal, her care tended every crop, and her laughter filled her home near Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

But when cataracts dimmed her world, she lost the ability to cook, walk confidently, or bathe herself without help. Once, as she tried to make tortillas, she burned her hand on the stove. Her blindness had turned a daily joy into a painful reminder of what she’d lost.

Her children, determined to help, took turns staying home to care for her. Then her son discovered a Seva-supported clinic offering cataract surgeries. Through Guatemala Brillando and the generous support of Seva’s donors, Doña Lidia received the care she desperately needed.
