Seva founded the Pyuthan District Eye Care Center in July 1993. Currently there is a proposal to rename it the Narendra-Gayetri District Eye Care Center to honor the remarkable couple behind its creation, Narendra and Gayetri Shrestha.
Local business owners in Pyuthan, the Shresthas, have long been dedicated to uplifting their community. They run a well-known grocery store in town, but their impact extends beyond commerce.
Several decades ago, they recognized a pressing need for accessible eye care in their district. They watched as friends and neighbors endured long, costly journeys to Kathmandu, Bhairahawa, and other cities for treatment – a trip that was out of reach for many due to financial struggles and time constraints. Some residents were left without care altogether.
Moved by this hardship, Narendra and Gayetri made a life-changing decision: they donated their family land in Bijuwar to establish an eye care center. Lacking technical expertise, they sought support from Lumbini Eye Institute, which provided the necessary guidance, while Seva contributed financial assistance to equip the center.
The center became a reality – a beacon of hope for Pyuthan and surrounding districts.
Though Narendra sadly passed away a few years ago, Gayetri continues to run their family business alongside her sons. She fondly recalls the center’s early days, sharing stories of the small acts of kindness that made a big difference.
“We used to serve rice porridge to patients after their cataract surgeries,” she remembers. “Sometimes we cooked at the center, other times from home. It was our way of ensuring they felt cared for.”
The Shrestha’s generosity has left a lasting legacy. Today, people travel from neighboring districts to receive treatment and surgeries – a testament to the couple’s vision and compassion.
